California-based creative music collective LA Signal Lab releases Water and Power, their second album of adventurous music and first on the genre-defying label, Orenda Records.

Founded in 2015 by composer/performers Noah Meites, Hitomi Oba, Dan Marschak, and Nick DePinna, LA Signal Lab is dedicated to composing, performing, and recording stylistically diverse new works with a focus on the intersection of improvised and pre-composed music.

For their sophomore release, LA Signal Lab teams up with two of Los Angeles’s premier contemporary duos (Aperture Duo and HOCKET) to explore the intersection of elemental forces, contemporary music, and modern life. Through works inspired by Japanese traditional folk song, modern art, Frankish mythology, Creole fiddling, and prophetic dreams, Water and Power presents an eclectic yet deeply personal vision of music and living, today.

HOCKET is a cutting edge piano duo based in Los Angeles. Lauded as “brilliant” by Mark Swed in the Los Angeles Times and as an "adventurous young ensemble" by The New Yorker. Members Sarah Gibson and Thomas Kotcheff are both pianist-composers dedicated to commissioning and performing contemporary music and have premiered over one hundred chamber and solo works. HOCKET is a Piano Spheres core artist and a performing artist on the Schoenhut Piano Company Artist Roster.

Aperture Duo curates fearless programs that explore new sounds, voices, and techniques through the lens of violin and viola chamber music. Lauded for their “precision and interpretation” along with their “distinct sense of unity and independence” (icareifyoulisten.com), Los Angeles-based Aperture Duo was founded in 2015 by violinist Adrianne Pope and violist Linnea Powell. Equally at home performing old and new music, Aperture Duo actively commissions diverse new works to expand the violin and viola duo repertoire

All four members of LA Signal Lab as well as HOCKET’s Sarah Gibson contribute compositions to the album.

Water and Power was recorded at the Ostin Music Center at the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music. It was engineered, mixed, and mastered by Carlos Mosquera and produced by Nick DePinna, Dan Marschak, Noah Meites, and Hitomi Oba.
