"Rosenboom again presents advanced conception and improv in equally large doses...enough musical ideas to fill up the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum... DANIEL ROSENBOOM’S BOOK OF STORMS:
A ROARING ELECTRO-PSYCH-JAZZ DEDICATION TO ANCIENT ELEMENTAL DEMON-GODS
Rooted in mysticism, magick, and mythology, trumpeter, composer, and producer Daniel Rosenboom's ongoing "book" series explores the more spiritually nebulous aspects of human nature. Using graphic scores and guided improvisation, these projects draw together some of the creative music world's most distinctive instrumental voices to intone esoteric incantations inspired by and dedicated to visions from "the other side." Psychedelic, raw, and highly imaginative, this music is for seekers and dreamers, and those who seek to go beyond.
The latest installment in this series is Book of Storms, a pair of ritualistic dances for the ancient Shinto demon-gods of Wind and Thunder: Fujin and Raijin. Featuring some of the Los Angeles creative music scene’s premiere improvisers including Vinny Golia (bass clarinet and gongs), Jake Vossler (guitars), Tim Lefebvre (bass), and Matt Mayhall (drums), Rosenboom’s vision pulses with otherworldly grooves and swirling sonic imagination. Conceived as two continuous sides of vinyl, this limited edition release recalls myriad musical influences as far reaching as Electric Miles Davis, Toru Takemitsu, and sludge metal like Earth or Sleep. The music plays out almost like two Kaiju fights – gigantic, chaotic, and cinematic dances that could serve as funky alternative soundtracks for a Godzilla film.
Recorded live at the Orenda Records 1st Anniversary Festival at bluewhale in downtown Los Angeles, this is music of a time and place. It’s part of a scene of players and audiences reveling in the obtuse connections between pulsing electronic music, 70’s psychedelic jazz, and exotic mysticism. It’s music for people who’s relationship with jazz begins with Miles Davis’s Bitches Brew and who party at raves, go to classical concerts, and love a big chunky electric guitar sound. It’s music of the Los Angeles Underground, right now.
