ORENDA 0118 - Wild With Life | oneL Sextet

Philip Rankin is a pianist, composer, producer, and educator based in Los Angeles, CA. Releasing music under the moniker oneL since 2017, Rankin’s work is a genre-fluid exploration shaped by his deep background in jazz, classical piano, and modular synthesis.

Music has taken a winding path through Rankin’s life. Beginning on piano, he later expanded to guitar, accordion, and modular synthesis— This electronic influence informs much of his compositional approach across projects.

His latest endeavor, the oneL sextet, marks a return to writing for acoustic instruments and jazz improvisation. Their debut recording, Wild with Life, is a meditation on his years living beside the Los Angeles River—a vivid reflection on nature, environment, and personal transformation.

In 2018, Rankin founded the ØCOASTensemble, a trio featuring David Tranchina on bass and Austin Pooley on drums. Designed to merge the exploratory spirit of modular synthesis with the spontaneity of jazz, the ensemble draws heavily from 1970s synth, ambient, fusion and experimental music. Their debut album, No Coast, was released at the renowned Blue Whale jazz club in Los Angeles.

Rankin also leads the long-running Bubbeleh, a Klezmer band he started in 2011. Bubbeleh has performed throughout California and Nevada at clubs, weddings, bars, and Bar Mitzvahs, bringing traditional Jewish music to life with a modern energy.

In addition to his performance and recording work, Rankin maintains a weekly Monday night residency at SOLARC Brewing in Los Angeles for their Ladle Night.  Performing long-form improvisations on modular synth, keyboard, and pump organ.
