ORENDA RECORDS

"Orenda Records is a small Southern California label that punches above its weight... Orenda’s offerings are informed by rock, modern classical, and jazz, and combine these genres in a natural, organic fashion... Orenda’s musicians grew up in a post-Braxton era where musical styles are viewed on a continuum rather than as individual silos of expression."

WITH “PROMISE OF A TREE” DRUMMER/COMPOSER TREVOR ANDERIES OFFERS A NEW VISION OF AMERICAN MUSIC

June 30, 2015

To sink one’s roots into solid ground in any artistic field is no simple task. But to set out in search of new land, fertile and promising, is nothing short of adventure. Trevor Anderies is a drummer and composer of boundless imagination and relentless drive, and yet a sense of peace and optimism that makes such a journey seem essentially effortless. With his latest release, Promise of A Tree, he uses his roots in music, family, and philosophy as a fuel for an intimate yet expansive sound that ventures forward with steadfast purpose.

This lush and colorful album offers a different perspective on the possibilities for creative music in the 21st century. While many artists seek the cutting edge with almost manic fervor, Trevor finds a grounded way to offer something new. Drawing on his own life experience through music, as well as his own family history, he’s created an album that reads almost like folk music rich with jazz and West African influences through a Zen Buddhist prism. The music is serene yet adventurous, meditative yet dynamic, and tenderly compelling.

For Promise of A Tree, Andeires assembled an ensemble that could really dive headfirst into this unlikely blend of style and vibe, and breathe life into some really unique music. With Alina Roitstein’s simply gorgeous voice at the front of the sound we’re immediately intrigued, soothed, and emboldened by her clear and effortless approach. Andrew Conrad dances in and around her vocals with soulful and lyric woodwinds, both tenor saxophone and clarinet, and Gregory Uhlmann fills out the sound on guitar with a huge sonic palette. Emilio Terranova provides a bold and romping bass and Trevor drives and directs with a steady hand from the drum chair.

At Orenda Records we’re always in search of music that offers a fresh perspective and provides an immersive listening experience. And when a titan of jazz like Bennie Maupin has something like this to say, we listen:

At a time when the sounds heard most often are merely stale copies of the past…talented composer/drummer Trevor Anderies is truly a welcome breeze of fresh air. It's young musicians like Trevor and his brilliant ensemble, who are bringing forth the highly creative, exciting and innovative improvisations of the 21st. century. This outstanding project proves that modern American music is absolutely in great hands.

—Bennie Maupin
